Chapter Sixteen

Dinner felt like it had lasted forever. Isi sat with her dinner on her side of the couch, her feet tucked underneath her. Taylor had picked out a movie, although Isi couldn’t have told anyone what they watched or what either of them ate. All of her attention was on Taylor. It was hard not to think about her, what they had done. Energy sizzled across her skin, both nerves and anticipation. There was an unsettling feeling that things had changed, but had they not? Was she the only one who had read into what had happened?

“If you keep thinking that hard, steam’s going to come out your ears,” Taylor said nonchalantly, tossing a piece of potato down to Niko, who was sitting between the two of them.

Isi rolled her eyes, but she smiled. Niko wagged her tail. It was strange, being in the honeymoon stage. Feeling giddy, wanted. But at the same time, there was a hazy undercurrent. What would happen, if she got together with Taylor? Would she lose her, just like she had lost her parents?

No. Isi struck that thought where it stood. It wasn’t going to happen. Eating another bite of dinner, Isi scraped the last of it off her plate and put it in her mouth, ignoring Niko’s sad look. “You already had dinner,” she informed Niko tartly.

Niko whuffed in denial.

Taylor grinned.

“Here, I’ll take the plates this time,” Isi said, standing with hers in hand and reaching for Taylor’s.

“Just put them in the sink, we can clean them tomorrow.” Taylor smiled at her, and there was a level of carefree in Taylor’s smile that Isi hadn’t seen before. Was it what they had done? Was it Isi’s trust in her? Isi didn’t know, but whatever it was, it sent warmth spiraling through her. It was like a warm hug. Stacking the two plates, Isi ducked out of the room and headed down the stairs, Niko following at her side.

“I’m glad you’ve decided I’m worth following,” Isi told her.

Niko nudged Isi with her head, almost tripping her on the way down the stairs.

Ah well. At least Niko tried. Isi bit back a grin, catching sight of Ellie in the kitchen. “I’m sorry Taylor made you make dinner,” she said.

Ellie grinned, but there was a weariness to her. “Last time she tried to cook dinner, she lit the kitchen on fire.”

Isi’s eyebrows went up. Well. At least she was risking Taylor’s kitchen, and not hers. “Do you have the recipe for the sandwiches? I’m supposed to teach her to cook.”

Ellie chuckled. “Brave girl.”

“Apparently.” Isi glanced at Niko, who was sitting by her side. “I might leave Niko at home, in case Taylor lights the whole house on fire this time.”

“To be fair, it was only a small fire.” Ellie tried to keep a straight face and failed. She paused, studying Isi. “Take care of her, will you?”

Isi paused, then placed the dishes in the sink. Her heart had skipped a beat, and she was certain Ellie could feel the flush creeping into her cheeks.
